Never Leave ‘Em Guessing

The world according to Melissa Creger means you’re never left guessing. As someone who values and practices transparency, she has a history of earning trust, being flexible, keeping an open mind (and ears) so her thinking is always challenged.

“I don’t ever want to guess how I’m doing, and so I never want my clients to be left guessing either,” shared Creger, whose career has historically been one of connecting and helping people. She got her first taste of “digital transformation” during her work with the Alzheimer’s Association when the organization realized it needed to move from pen and paper to online signups and payments.

“This experience gave me insight into how technology is critical for sustainable growth,” she added. This past experience with technology as a user, coupled with her tenure working in the technology industry since 2012, made her a great fit for Trility Consulting when she joined the team as a Director of Business Development in July.

“Melissa values transparency and seeks to set clear expectations when managing relationships, and the by-product of that approach is trust,” said Brody Deren, Chief Strategy Officer. “We are excited to have her join the team and support our growing client partnerships in Omaha and beyond.”

Trility’s outcome-based delivery method means clients receive observations, recommendations, and options to iterate for the best, highest-priority outcome. Creger will help build upon this proven approach and ensure we continue to deliver over and over again on our promises – meeting time, budget, and scope that aligns with business and technical requirements.

A History of Making Life Easier

Ryan Skarin makes life easier. This was the common thread when asked about his past roles in the technology industry. This innate ability makes him the ideal Solutions Director for Trility Consulting as a large part of his role is identifying challenges and crafting technology solutions. With clients facing constant change, capturing, protecting, and growing market share requires innovative technology that allows for speed and agility.

His journey has always been to help those around him. One of Skarin’s first programming jobs was writing software to speed up the manufacturing process. He saw the need to teach the industrial engineers how to code so the whole team could support the outcome. When his father asked him to join his real estate appraisal company and help him, Skarin answered yes. Eventually, Skarin’s journey took him back to programming where he worked for Staples and he took pride in building, among many other solutions,  a simple, streamlined web-based tool that solved some frequent and frustrating ordering process problems – essentially building an easy button for the office supply store that sold itself as the well-known red “ easy” button.

Skarin shared one aspect that must always be considered. “When we define a solution, we also have to understand how it’s viable for the business and enjoyable for the users and sustainable for the client’s IT group to own.”

Adding that a common dilemma that he always aims to avoid: An excellent solution is crafted for the users, but might be difficult to fit into the existing IT landscape. Or IT can maintain it, but it causes the users undue friction. “It’s easy to solve the direct problem a client asks you to solve, but it takes a great deal of context to provide solutions that work long-term for everyone,” he said.

According to Chief Strategy Officer Brody Deren, “Ryan’s experience spans multiple industries and from startups to large corporations. This exposed him to a diversity of problems, and allows him to more quickly connect the dots and do it contextually to better serve our client’s desired outcomes.”

Skarin’s desire to grow and help others aligns with Trility’s core values and outcome-based delivery method. “He’s already bringing observations, recommendations, and options to ensure our teams achieve the best, highest-priority outcome,” Deren added.

Trility’s Move Supports Continued Growth in Modern, Dynamic Space

A small group of business, delivery, and software systems engineers who enjoyed working together formalized their on-again, off-again contractual status three years ago when Trilty Consulting first opened its doors. Their expertise at helping companies build secure, scalable, and highly performant software systems with a security-by-design mindset and a strike team delivery model has led to continued growth – necessitating a new home to support their long-term plans.

“We have always had national clients with international footprints, so we’ve always had geographically distributed teams who live anywhere and work anywhere,” shared CEO Matthew D. Edwards. “We decided it was time to move into a space that enables more opportunities for meetings, training, events, and client-partner collaboration.”

While the timing may appear odd in light of current events, Trility’s leadership started the search last fall and found their new home inside NCMIC’s modern, dynamic headquarters located on 15 beautiful acres in Clive, Iowa.

New Address

14001 University Ave., Suite 300, Clive, IA 50325

Safely (and Securely) Maintaining Business

While local team members regularly come to the office, Trility’s way of doing business is to work securely where needed. Now, they are also focused on doing it safely. This means teams are working remotely during this pandemic and will continue to do so until the new location is scheduled to reopen on June 1.

“The new space allows for more social distancing to ensure the safety of our team,” Edwards shared. “We look forward to the day when we can host an open house with our clients, friends, and family.”

Highly Available, Reliable Systems

Cloud security and reliability are a No. 1 priority to Trility. They are focused more than ever on helping companies securely enable a remote workforce long-term through cloud adoption or on-premise solutions.

With the majority of breaches in 2019 due to cloud storage misconfigurations, teams continue to be diligent and never compromise when it comes to security.

Remote Work Maturity Model: Where is Your Company During Coronavirus Pandemic?

The Internet is full of tips for “remote workers.” However, if you are a business leader who is responsible for enabling remote work, this Maturity Model can help you identify gaps you need to address and communicate timely decisions.

This Remote Work Maturity Model includes these four areas: Policies, Technology, Secured Technology, and ultimately maintaining Operational Productivity.

Having Policies & Technology in Place

Having the appropriate policies and technology is the first step in the Remote Work Maturity Model. You have policies that outline expectations and required behaviors, and all or some of your team may have laptops or devices that allow them to work from anywhere. Many companies have not yet needed to solve either of these problems and have been caught off-guard with the immediacy of COVID-19 pandemic. If you have both, now is a good time provide clarity on those expectations through communication.

Remote Work Maturity Model

Ensuring Security Measures are in Place

Having a portion or all of your workforce operating remotely adds new attack vectors that your information security team needs to address. Depending on applications, networks, and other solutions you have in place, adjustments might need to be made to existing security solutions. You might even realize you need to implement stronger, more stringent security measures. And again, re-educating your workforce about phishing, physically securing their devices, and avoiding malicious websites is critical.

It’s also a good time to confirm if you have tested, secured technology solutions in place to prevent attacks. Encrypted devices? Redundant network connections? VPN solutions? Secure cloud configuration? Traffic monitoring? Logging? Alerting?

Remote Work Maturity Model

Keeping People Productive

Once you’ve confirmed policies and tested, secured technology solutions are in place, your focus is on maintaining the same level of operational productivity. Coordinating work and collaboration across teams, departments, and the entire organization presents an even greater challenge when dynamic changes occur this quickly. Teams must understand objectives, along with the necessary resources and collaboration tools to optimize engagement and productivity while working remotely.

How you respond to the novel Coronavirus in keeping your team safe, productive, and secure, can serve as an experiment where your teams have the chance to discover new, more productive ways to work together.

Need Sound Advice Now?

The Trility team wants to equip you and your team to quickly adapt in order for your people to remain safe, productive, and secure.

Equipping you to keep people safe, productive, secure

Maintaining Business Continuity Amid Epidemic Response

After a tumultuous week which concluded with President Trump declaring a national emergency in response to novel coronavirus concerns, companies have been enacting their business continuity plans and instructing their employees to work remotely, some for the first time.  As a company who has enabled remote-work since our founding, we wanted to share how we make certain our people work remotely in the most effective and secure manner. We offer these lessons learned to help those mitigating these disruptions and challenges.

How We Do Business Securely

Live Anywhere, Work Anywhere

Our employees work from home but also work where our clients need them. This means we understand how to work securely from home, our office, and our clients’ offices. In normal circumstances, these include hotels, sky clubs, coffee shops. If you have questions or concerns, we can help.

Cloud-Based Availability

We help companies securely migrate to the cloud and it’s been our home since the beginning. Everything we utilize for internal operations and client-facing business is cloud-based – allowing Trility to seamlessly operate from anywhere with no disruption. Cloud security and reliability are a No. 1 priority to us. With the majority of breaches in 2019 due to cloud storage misconfigurations, we must continue to be diligent and never compromise when it comes to security.

Secure Device Management

As businesses transition to work from home, reinforce device management policies, and determine if they are secure enough. Our team is geographically distributed across the country. As a best-practice, consider some of these approaches we use:

  • Hard drives must have full disk encryption
  • Screens must be locked when you are away from the keyboard
  • Screens must be set to auto-lock after five minutes if you are away from the keyboard and forget to lock
  • Do not store customer data locally to the laptop
  • Don’t attach your laptop to insecure public wireless networks – every time it is available, use VPN
  • Use modern operating systems and tools and keep them current at all times

Lines of Communication

The days of operational 8-5 hours are gone. Maintain several lines of communication in order to meet the needs of clients, partners, and employees. We use Slack, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Confluence, JIRA, GSuite (Google Productivity Suite), and several more to align with our client’s preferred use of communication. Find one that works for your business.

  • Have dynamic communication tools to serve as a foundation for most written communications.   This is preferably not email.
  • Use communication tools that allow for one-to-one, group, team, and enterprise-wide communications through various channels – video and voice-capable ones are ideal.
  • Provide a stream of news and updates to employees throughout the organization.
  • Integrate the communication tool via APIs to your various productivity tools like your project management, ERP, CRM, or issue tracking systems.
  • For dynamic document collaboration, use cloud-based tools with traceable version control.

Redundant Systems

No one person or location holds information, and backups are always in place. Whether it’s a person, a process, or line of code, we have systems and backups for completing work and documentation is always provided because we never want our clients handcuffed to us.

Start Simple. Then Automate. And Always Be Secure.

Under normal circumstances, we help companies defend or extend their market share in an era of rapid disruption by simplifying, automating, and securing each iteration. The era of disruption has been disrupted. We are here to help.

The Internet is full of noise right now. Big problems need to be solved, and they can’t all be Googled.

Veterans Day: Honoring those who understand “true requirements” of service

The majority of Americans will never experience the true requirements of service. But we are surrounded by those who do in our day-to-day lives. Today, we say thank you.

Our office is closed today for Veterans Day. We’d like to share something one of our team members, Jennifer Davis, shared last week reminding our team about today.

“On November 11th, our company will observe Veterans Day. First and foremost, if you are a Veteran, we here at Trility want to thank you for your service. For those of us who haven’t served, we can never fully understand the sacrifices you’ve made for our country, our safety, and our freedoms.

Thank you.

Almost all of my life, I’ve lived a few minutes from the world’s biggest naval base, Naval Station Norfolk, and close to U.S. Navy master jet base, Naval Air Station Oceana.  I get to see and hear jets fly over regularly. I can watch the Blue Angels and still get excited every year for their powerful display at the Oceana Air Show. From the beach, I’ve watched massive aircraft carriers leaving for or coming home from deployment. With my toes in the sand along the Chesapeake Bay, I’ve seen hovercraft vessels practicing for missions.

The Blue Angels running laps over my house practicing for this weekend’s air show. – Jennifer Davis

Growing up and into my adult life, these sights and sounds have had a great impact on me. But I’ve only watched from the sidelines. My exposure has been limited to the displays of the awesome power of our Nation’s military. What I haven’t seen are the true requirements of the service itself. As we look forward to Monday, I want to celebrate and honor those who have served. I want to be reminded of what it takes to serve others. I want to be thankful for the freedoms I get to enjoy because of those who have served. And I want to encourage you to do the same.”

– Jennifer Davis, Director of Operations

Recalculating My Route…

Originally published on LinkedIn on Oct. 3, 2019.

This is not how I drew it up; it’s not how I planned it. I’m type A. I like to be in control… and this wasn’t my original Google Maps route.

I have joined Trility Consulting as Chief Strategy Officer, and I couldn’t be more jazzed about it!

Wait… what???

“You just started a business 5 years ago, didn’t you?” Some might ask. “Why would you want to work for someone else?” they’ll say. “Why not start another company?”

I did start a company 5 years ago, yes. A technology recruiting and staff augmentation company called Dynamo. It became profitable within 12 months, grew every year (became an Inc 5000 Fastest Growing Company), supported a bunch of great customers, and built a great brand with a great group of people.

I was honored to help lead that company, from its initial twinkle-in-the-eye to becoming a growing and recognized brand.

It just wasn’t the right organizational arrangement at the right time. I eventually came to the realization that it would be healthier if we restructured the company, and that led to me exiting. It was hard, yes. It was emotional, very much so. But it was the right decision.

Since my exit, I’ve listened to a bunch of people and considered numerous ideas for my next road to travel. Over the years, I’ve been lucky to grow a network of great contacts, gained know-how, and have a number of potential customers to pursue if I were to start another recruiting and staff augmentation business. It’s a compelling opportunity to consider, and I’ve given it a lot of thought. So why not do it?

Trility is why not. Matthew Edwards is why not. Brenton Rothchild is why not. And the rest of the great team of people at Trility are why not.

Trility is a collection of incredibly bright, value-driven, people-first advisors, technologists, and business people who have critical skills and experience to help clients win in the modern digital economy. They are a business and technology consultancy that delivers results, predictably and repeatedly. They solve complex problems, help guide clients down roads they’ve never ventured, and offer solutions in areas like Cloud, IoT, Cybersecurity, Strategy and Roadmapping, Operational Modernization, and Data/Analytics. They bring products and services to the table that are helping lead enterprise companies (I mean huge Fortune 100 companies) through transformational efforts. And they do it all with security top of mind, all of the time.

I’m also ready for a new challenge. I’ve spent the last 14 years of my career in the recruiting and staff augmentation space. I learned a lot in the industry, and it provided a great foundation. This next chapter comes with different challenges, a different business model, and a bigger opportunity to impact the customers we serve. And Trility does it better, with a more human-centered approach, with more satisfied customers than its competition (think 7-star service, on a 5-star scale).

My personal roadmap has often been in a state of “recalculating” over the years. Heck, I went to Creighton University as an exercise science and business major, and I thought I was going to become a Physical Therapist and start a PT practice. A few unexpected reroutes since then, and I certainly haven’t arrived at that destination. And that’s okay. I’ve learned to adjust my outlook and path, based upon passions, priorities, and opportunities.

I’m blessed to have worked with a ton of great people in my career. I’ve learned so much, from so many. I only hope to give back a sliver of wisdom, inspiration, and know-how that I’ve gleaned from colleagues, consultants, clients, mentors, students, and contacts along the way.

It’s time to get started down the next road. In my role, I will be helping the Trility team expand its markets, customers, offerings, partnerships, impact, and growth. I’ll be looking to help the team promote and reinforce the innovative, always-improving, and team-first culture that already exists. We will be growing, we will be hiring, and we will be ready to partner with companies looking to defend or extend their market share in the digital economy of today. If you’re interested in learning more, please reach out.

My new route is set. I’m not sure what surprises are in store on this road, but I’m sure there will be plenty and I’m looking forward to each of them.
